Teisco BackgroundAlthough Teisco guitars were cheaply made and inexpensive, they developed a strong collector following starting in the 1990s. Alternative and indie rock and blues guitarists with a propensity for odd instruments rediscovered Teisco guitars, which could be purchased at yard sales and pawn shops for well under $100. Kawai Musical Instruments, the owner of the Teisco name, recognized the trend and resurrected the brand in the early 90s with moderate success.Teisco was unusual in that they manufactured models of their own design, as well as knock-off copies. It is the Teisco Del Ray original design guitars that attract collectors, as many other manufacturers produced knock-offs of equal or greater quality.

Collector values for Teisco originals are largely set by market demand of specific models. Teisco SD-4LThe unusual Teisco SD-4L of 1963, featured four pickups and eight switches, in addition to the standard volume, tone and pickup switches. This vinyl-clad, tremolo equipped guitar is among the most sought after for Teisco collectors, and can fetch $300-900. Teisco May QueenTeisco Del Ray “May Queen” of 1968 is another coveted model, with prices also in the $300 to $800 range. The semi-hollow oval shaped guitar featured two pickups, volume, tone and pickup selector switch with tremolo system.

Tesico TRG-1The TRG-1 was an innovative guitar, with built in amplifier and speaker. Also sold under the “Kay” and “Silvertone” brands available through Sears, the TRG can fetch from $200 to $500. Jackson Brown used a TRG-1 for his 2002 tour, sans the built-in amplifier, which sparked new interest in this unique model. Teisco TulipThe E-120 and ET-200 are commonly known as “Tulip” guitars.

Compact and lightweight, these instruments are recognized for their distinctive tulip-shaped body and simple electronics. Tulips are collectible and plentiful, and can be found in the $50 to $150 range. Teisco Spectrum 5The obscure and rare Spectrum 5 model was a higher-end Teisco Del Ray. With a solid walnut body and hand-lacquered finish, the Spectrum 5 sported unusual electronics including three split-pickups, mono and stereo outputs, and color-coded pickup selector switches.

Spectrum 5 guitars are at the top of the collector value scale, with examples in good condition going for $ 500 to well over $1000. Teisco Buyers BewareBear in mind that most Teisco instruments were inexpensive beginner models, produced during a period when imported products were not quite up to modern standards. Many of these instruments have been modified or stripped of parts over the years, but with a strong following and used parts available through collector and auction sites, support and interest in Teisco Del Ray guitars is going strong.

Up for sale, a 1960s Teisco Del Ray model EB-210 bass in excellent, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. With an asymmetrical 'violin' body shape reminiscent of a melty Hofner and two fantastic single coil pickups, the EB-210 is a visually striking bass that truly sounds as good as it looks and plays effortlessly. On the bridge pickup, the tone is very dynamic, bright and present, with great growl and clarity. In the neck position things naturally get a bit deeper and fuller, and the range of the tone controls and treble roll off of the individual volume knobs is truly impressive. With the tone almost down to zero, the low end fills out in a significant way, with a thump and punch reminiscent of a Precision Bass or Gibson Mudbucker. Professionally setup, intonated and strung with fresh roundwould 45-100 strings, this Teisco EB-210 is one of the finest Japanese-made vintage basses we have in the shop here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar!

Weighing only 6lbs 2oz with a comfortable 30' scale length, the EB-210 is easy on the back and perfect for players who prefer the more compact scale. The neck profile is a slender C with a smooth gloss finish and the bound rosewood fretboard sports pearloid rounded block inlays. The frets are in great shape with no buzzing or dead spots, and only light and consistent wear from frets 1-7, with almost no wear further up the neck and plenty of height and life left in the frets. And you simply can't beat having action this low and consistent! On the headstock, the tuners turn smoothly and the original metal 'Tesico Del Ray' badge is cleanly riveted on the rosewood veneer.

All of the electronics work flawlessly, with pots that turn smoothly and pickups that have strong, balanced output. The original chrome hardware is remarkably clean and this bass has been very well cared for over the decades. The combination of a spruce top and maple back and sides produces a balanced and complex tone with the soft attack of the fully hollow body.

Both carved rosewood thumbrests are present as well as the stock bridge cover which doubles as a string mute with original foam that still works great! Cosmetically, this bass is a real stunner, with only a few small scuffs around the edges of the body.

There is also a small repaired crack dead center on the back, professionally glued, perfectly stable and too faint to capture with a camera lens. We like to be thorough and disclose everything! As the photos show, this bass is clean as can be. QuickResponder Accepted Payment Methods.
